What is a 3D Mammogram?

The radiologists at Austin Breast Imaging are experts in 3D mammography, or Digital Breast Tomosynthesis. Instead of static, traditional 2D mammograms, Tomosynthesis is added to the standard 2D mammogram resulting in multiple, thinly sliced images of the breast removing any overlapping structures from obscuring small tumors. The combined exam has been shown to reduce call backs for additional tests by 40 percent in our practice.

3D Mammography

Studies Show 3D Mammography Finds More Invasive Cancers and Reduces Unnecessary Recalls

Dr. Stephen L. Rose of Austin Breast Imaging co-authored two 3D mammography studies, including the largest one to date with nearly half a million patients.

Initially, Dr. Rose looked to Tomosynthesis to screen women with dense breast tissue, but he’s found that it’s valuable for screening women with less dense breast tissue as well.

In his research, he found 3D mammography finds significantly more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary recalls, according to two large, retrospective studies published in The American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) and The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study, “Implementation of Breast Tomosynthesis in a Routine Screening Practice: An Observational Study” features data collected from Rose Imaging Specialists in clinical offices at TOPS Breast Center in Houston.
