Second Opinions/Outside Consultations

At Austin Breast Imaging, we know that you want to be sure your diagnosis is correct. Getting a second opinion means asking another breast radiology specialist, or a team of specialists, to review all of your medical reports and test results, and provide another perspective on your diagnosis.
As part of Rose Imaging Specialists, the largest breast-specific radiology group in the United States, we have the experience, expertise and specialized depth to give you and your doctor an added measure of confidence in your breast diagnosis.

A second opinion may confirm your original doctor’s diagnosis or may suggest additional tests or procedures to arrive at the correct diagnosis. Even if you’ve already had treatment, it’s not too late to get a second opinion.

Many people with breast cancer decide to get second opinions, and doctors are used to hearing this request. Possible reasons for seeking a second opinion include:

Your radiologist is not a breast specialist.

If your first radiologist is not specifically dedicated to breast imaging, it may be wise to get a second opinion from a breast cancer specialist. A breast cancer specialist has the expertise that comes from seeing more cases and keeping up with the latest research.

Your doctor tells you there is uncertainty about the type or extent of the breast cancer you have.

Imaging test results (mammography, MRI, ultrasound) and pathology test results (tests performed on the breast cancer tissue) are not always 100% conclusive. If your doctor expresses any uncertainty about the cancer based on your test results, it is wise to get a second opinion.

You’re having trouble understanding and communicating with your doctor, and/or you want your options explained by someone else.

This can be a good time to find another specialist who takes the time to explain things in ways you can understand. A Rose Imaging Specialist will take the time to meet with you and review your test findings.

You’re doubting the accuracy of the first opinion, or you feel that all options have not been explored.

Perhaps you’ve done your own research or sought advice from other women with breast cancer, and this has led you to wonder if there might be other options for you. Or maybe something just doesn’t feel right. If you’re having any doubts, it’s a good idea to get a second opinion.

Your doctor recommends that you seek a second opinion.

If your case is complex or uncertain, your doctor might even suggest that you get a second opinion. Many doctors welcome the input of a second expert on challenging cases.
